On December 13, 2009, Israel's government approved the proposal of Environmental Protection Minister Gilad Erdan to make government ministries more environmentally efficient. The decision calls for: - Setting quantitative, measurable targets for the reduction of electricity, water and paper consumption in government ministries.
- Reducing the quantity of waste produced and increasing use of products made from recycled materials.
- Committing to a switch to energy efficient, low pollution transport.
- Requiring internal auditors of government ministries to present performance reports to the Ministry of Environmental Protection, which will compile the data and present annual reports to the government and to the public.
Environmental Protection Minister Gilad Erdan: "The obligation to incorporate environmental considerations in the routine operations of government ministries and their employees will both save resources and prevent the waste of public funds. At the same time it will increase the environmental awareness of civil servants. I believe that this will be an opportunity to change the environmental perception of government which will allow it to serve as an example to the general public and to the business sector."
